34. Money

Explain the following,"Her voice is full of money." (Gatsby to Nick about Daisy)

  1. “Her voice is full of money”, a voice comprised of nothing more than the sheer satisfaction of knowing you have the ability to do nearly whatever you wish because you have the money to do so. Daisy knows that she has the ability to do just this; just like a child knows he has the ability to live off of his parents till he is nearly 18. Daisy, as we have clearly seen in this book, loves to let money influence her actions. Whether it be thru sitting down to drinks or to drive into the city on the slightest of impulse; Daisy has the means to do it. Therefore the follow statement, “her voice was full of money,” describes the type of voice a person of great wealth would most likely have a tendency to use considering they have the reputation to back it up.

  2. I agree with Michael. “Her voice is full of money” is the perfect way to describe Daisy. Her whole world revolves around money. It is the only thing that Daisy thinks about. She even chooses money, meaning Tom, over the love that Gatsby can give her. Also like Michael said, Daisy thinks that because she has money she can do anything. The sad thing is that in her society, and still in ours, money can buy most things. “Her voice is full of money” is the way to describe a person like Daisy, one who only thinks about money and thinks that the world revolves around her because she has the money

  3. I agree with both Michael and Ana. Daisy is a person who knows she is charming and that her money can get her pretty much everything in life she would ever want. Daisy has all this money that she can play with yet she told Nick, “Well, I’ve had a very bad time, Nick, and I’m pretty cynical about everything.” (Fitzgerald 21). Daisy also knows that her money or her husband’s money or Gatsby’s money can give her a good life and she can buy people’s affection. I disagree with Ana when she says Daisy would give up Tom (money) for Gatsby because she is not giving up any money because Gatsby has just as much money as Tom does, if not more. A person whose “voice is full of money” can be influential in their world, but not because of their character, but because of their money. “Her voice is full of money” because she hasn’t had to go through poverty because she and her family have had money to spare.

  4. I agree, but I also think that it may mean something deeper. Money is a medium of exchange in order to gain something. What I believe is that when Fitzgerald used the expression “Her voice is full of money”, he was referring to Daisy trying to show off to people with her bragging about how she got anything and everything anytime she wished, speaking of course, of material things. So in a way she was using her bragging, to make people buy the fact that she was rich, and fit into the upper class society at the time.
So yes, she always spoke about money very much and her world did revolve around it.
Without money, she was nothing, being an upper classer was basically her world. And you can see this since she was a little kid, her life was perfect, or so she thought.

  5. I think that when Gatsby told Nick “Her voice is full of money,” Gatsby meant that Daisy believes that money can handle everything, so she will throw away anything for money, even love. I agree with Michael that with money you have the ability to do many things. It is true, money can do many things, but to gain that power she threw away her dignity. By having a voice that is full of money, it shows that she was greedy always wanted more, just like she went to Gatsby instead of Tom. She wanted to show people that she had materialistic possessions just like Xara said. However, I also believer that this phrase also shows that Daisy has lost her charm that Gatsby had once seen, that he is dissapointed in the way she became. She became a person who only wanted money to use for herself.
