38. The Child

What was Gatsby's reaction to Daisy's child? Why?

  1. When Gatsby saw Daisy’s child, he was in complete state of shock. “He kept looking at the child with surprise” (Fitzgerald 123) and “took up his drink” (124). The reason why Gatsby was shocked and surprised because he only thought of him and Daisy together and never had imagined that Daisy had a child. He is always thinking about the past, when “his lips’ touch she blossomed for him like a flower” (117). However now, he suddenly realizes that she had made a commitment towards her husband and her child and he knew that he was too late. She was not the same girl she was five years ago. Gatsby could not pick up where they left off because Daisy is has a husband and a child.
