28. Myrtle's Death

What was the importance of Myrtle's death? How would the story have changed if Myrtle had not been killed?

  1. Myrtle´s death was important because it triggered Gatsby´s death, it was the reason Wilson got angry, decided to take revenge and killed Gatsby. If Myrtle wouldn´t have died the story could have taken different roads. Tom would have had to make a decision, either stay with his wife that cheated on him, or with his lover that´s married. It could have ended happily with Tom and Daisy getting a divorce and each marrying their lover. Then Gatsby would still be alive and Nick would still be his next door neighbor in New York. So if Myrtle had not died, everything could have worked out for Gatsby.
