31. Tom and Daisy

Why do Daisy and Tom stay together?

  1. Tom and Daisy have a business relationship, they both gain something from the other. Daisy gets to live in high class, like she is used to do. And Tom has a wife to come home to and an excuse not to marry Myrtle.
Also they are already married, and if they split up what would become of their reputation (which in this period is very important.) They would be the gossip of the rich and would have to move someplace else. And not only their reputation, what would become of their child, because most likely in that time the man (provider) has custody of the children. And if Daisy wants to stay with her child she must stay with Tom.
And in the end of the book Daisy does go with Tom, although we have no proof she did this willingly we also do not know if she was forced into it by Tom. So I assume she picked him which would mean they were actually in love and did not want to split their family up.
