40. Myrtle

What reason did Myrtle give for marrying George Wilson? What does this say about her social status and the role of women in that social status?

  1. The Reason why Myrtle had married George Wilson is because she thought “he was a gentleman” (Fitzgerald 39) and “knew something about breeding” (39).In other words, she was in love with him. However, once she married to George, she suffered by the limitations of the money which she had to live in the garage from that day onward. This demonstrates that Myrtle is in the lower class than the rest of her friends because she is married to a man who earns little money. This also shows that women, at that time, had the role to marry man who are either in the same social status or higher, take care of the house and children and make food for the husband. Women did not have the courage to get a job and make their own money so that makes them depend more on their husband they marry. Unlike today, they also did not have the freedom to do whatever they want for their roles prevent them to do so.
