35. The Green Light

Explain the importance of the following quotation,"Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of the [green] light had nowvanished forever." (Nick about Gatsby after he had met with Daisy)

  1. The green light symbolized the hope Gatsby had about being with Daisy again. The light was at Tom and Daisy’s mansion which was across the river. The fact that the light was across the river which separated East and West Egg, made it seem like the possibility of being with Daisy again was far away.
So when the prodigious significance of the light disappeared, it meant that he was once more, able to be with Daisy, even though it would be the last time.

  2. I agree with Xara in that the green light was the idea that Gatsby had that he would soon be with Daisy, and when he finally met with Daisy, that light lost significance because he thought he had finally attained his goal. “Gatsby believed in the Green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther…. And one fine morning—” The green light was hope. Each night Gatsby would see this light and it would fill his heart and spirit with the hope of finally meeting with Daisy, or his idea of Daisy which was perfect and beautiful. This green light would make him work harder and harder; persevere with his efforts to finally meet the love of his life. When he met Daisy, this ideal died away. Part in joy of finally reuniting with Daisy, but it was also about the disappointment in the idea of Gatsby. Daisy was not perfect, far from it. And this must have truly affected Gatsby on an unconscious manner. Gatsby would never be able to see that green light in the same way he had seen it before. That great expectation had died away.
